LONELINESS IN THE TIME OF PANDEMIC

The Rev. Patrice Al-Shatti
Deacon, All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Phoenix

“I will ask the true and painful question: Might I be putting off the dying of this flesh while each lonely hour shrivels my soul?” In Vilma O. Ginzberg’s poignant poem, Skin Hunger in Coronavirus Times, we may well be hearing the lament of our own spirits. As the pandemic of 2020 unfolds, nearly half of Americans say they struggle with anxiety or depression. And almost everyone I know has a sadness of the soul that expresses itself as a lack of motivation.

ITEMS OF INTEREST THIS WEEK
Featured Online Sunday Services
During the time our churches are worshiping online, we will feature Sunday services in English and in Spanish from our churches around the diocese, so that everyone will always be able to find an online service. Here are this week’s services: St. Alban’s (Tucson) at 8:30 a.m. (English) and Iglesia Episcopal de San Pablo (Phoenix) at 9:30 a.m. (Spanish). NOTE: If the service is livestreamed on Facebook, no account is needed to watch.
Episcopal Churches Continue to Advocate for Migrants
[ENS] Over 6.5 million people worldwide have tested positive for the coronavirus, and more than 387,000 have died, the vast majority – 107,728 – in the United States. Beginning in China in January, government-issued stay-at-home orders aimed at slowing the spread of the virus have shut down all but essential businesses and services in most countries, causing a global recession and leading to more than 40 million unemployment claims in the U.S. Read more. (Note: The Rev. David Chavez, Missioner for Border Ministries, was interviewed for this article.)
TEC Invites Participation in Good News Gardens
[ENS] What can people do in this moment? One new and sacrificial act of love is to commit to planting more, praying more, and proclaiming more, in order to share the loving, liberating, and life-giving Good News of God’s love with all people. Read more.
Rescheduled Day of Ministry Discernment
The Commission on Ministry (COM) will be offering a Zoom-based Day of Ministry Discernment on Saturday, July 11 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. for those discerning Holy Orders (Priest or Deacon). This two-hour event will not be the holistic event that would have been held in person. However, for those discerning Holy Orders, it will give them the pertinent data, revised timelines, and a set of expectations to get through the coming year in a new way if they decide to become a formal aspirant. Register today. COM is planning a Day of Ministry Discernment for the laity in the fall.

DEACON BEACON
A monthly feature of one of our deacons and their ministry.

The Rev. Lynn Adwell
This month, our featured deacon is The Rev. Lynn Adwell, who serves at Church of the Epiphany in Tempe. Ministry as an Episcopal Deacon has not always seemed a likely prospect for Lynn, who did not belong to the Episcopal church until 1993. It was when she listened to a homily by Eric Johnson, a postulant in Dubuque Iowa, that she recognized her call to the diaconal ministry: “…to represent Christ and his Church, particularly as a servant of those in need…” Book of Common Prayer, page 856. COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS)
Resources in Arizona
During this crisis, Bishop Reddall envisions the Diocesan Office being a clearing house for questions and a source of connection for congregations in need. To that end, the Diocese has set up a resource page on our website to include links for prayer, reliable information about COVID-19, and support for clergy and lay mental health.

Remember in your Prayers of the People:

Our companion Diocese:

The Diocese of Arizona’s Companion Relationship with the Diocese of Navajoland concluded some time ago. Companion Diocese relationships are generally for a specific time period. Arizona is presently in the process of establishing a new companion relationship with a different diocese. Our support, friendship, and prayers for the Diocese of Navajoland continue unabated, however.

And those who have asked for our prayers:

  • All healthcare workers
  • All first responders
  • All members of the Armed Forces,
especially those who are serving overseas
  • All those affected by incarceration
  • All those affected by recent weather, natural disasters, and
    civil unrest
