Ruby Sales preaches in Jonathan Daniels’ home parish
Fifty years and three days after Jonathan Daniels died in Hayneville, Alabama, by stepping in front of a shotgun aimed at her, Ruby Sales, a human rights activist, said her heart was heavy as she preached in his home parish, St. James Episcopal Church.
But she also said she found joy in this year’s commemorations of Daniels’ death, along with renewed hope for the future.

RIP: Former Jerusalem and Middle East Bishop Samir Hana Kafity
The Most Rev. Samir Hana Kafity, twelfth president-bishop and primate of Jerusalem and the Middle East, and bishop-in-residence at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Poway, died on the afternoon of Aug. 21 at home after a stroke. He was 81 years old.
