WALKING THE MOURNER’S PATH
This week, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Catherine Gilbert, the Program Director of Walking the Mourner’s Path, and Rev. Dorian Mulvey, the Rector of St. Anthony on the Desert in Scottsdale. Walking the Mourner’s Path is a “Christ-centered grief program” consisting of eight weeks of workshops facilitated by lay and clergy leaders. The program is a ministry of St. Anthony on the Desert.

Social Media Sunday
How will you and your church be participating in Social Media Sunday (Hashtag: #SMS19) THIS Sunday, September 29? SMS is an ecumenical effort to share the good news about building community with social media. People, churches, and faith-based organizations are invited and encouraged to share words, photos, images, videos & links about faith on social media sites. Get ideas.

Responding to Hurricane Dorian
[ERD] Episcopal Relief & Development continues to coordinate with the Anglican Alliance in support of the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos’ response to Hurricane Dorian.  The staff is in regular contact with the diocese as it focuses on assessing the needs of vulnerable communities in the Bahamas. Anglican Diocesan staff and clergy are also coordinating with local organizations to provide food and other emergency supplies and making plans to support a long-term response. Donate to the relief effort (select the “Hurricane Relief” option).
Incarceration Affects Everyone
September is Prison Awareness Month in our Diocese. This information is provided by The Rev. Kim Crecca, Diocesan Prison Ministry Convenor.
At a recent town hall meeting in Phoenix, AZ Representative Walt Blackman addressed the crowd after hearing often heartbreaking stories from the many family members who have or had a loved one that was incarcerated. He boldly stated, “Incarceration affects everyone!” But there is a large contingent that is rarely heard from. They suffer in silence and often bear a huge burden of anger. It is important for us to remember that those who work in correctional facilities and/or are employed by the AZ Deptartment of Corrections are also affected by incarceration. Did you know that correctional facility officers commit suicide at a rate that is 39% higher than the general population? Or that they suffer from PTSD rates that are 10x higher than us “normal” folks? Their divorce rate is 20% higher than the national average and heart disease is 50% higher than any other occupation. (These figures are from the American Correctional Officer Intelligence Network.) Given these disturbing statistics, the low pay, long hours, and low level of prestige associated with being a correctional officer; it’s no surprise that there is a high rate of turnover in this field of employment. A correctional officer at Perryville Women’s Prison once asked if we could include the officers in our prayers. He wondered if we could pray for their safety, for compassion, and for the ability to resist temptation. I assured him we would and encourage you to pray for “all those affected by incarceration” as well. Learn more about the Diocesan Prison Ministry.

DEACON BEACON
A monthly feature of one of our deacons and their ministry.
The Rev. Ben Rodenbeck
This whole journey began in Kingman when I was talking with Fr. Phil Shaw at Trinity one day and telling him that I didn’t feel fulfilled in my job. It was a good job, but something was missing in my life. He looked me dead in the face and asked if I had ever considered being a deacon. I said, “Are you insane?” He assured me he wasn’t. Although it only took me about 20 minutes to recognize the truth of my calling, I let Fr. Phil believe I was thinking about it for a couple of weeks! Read more.
